Ended up seeing two movies Friday evening – Collateral and Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle. Probably the best 20 bucks I’ve spent in awhile, that’s for sure. It was kind of odd seeing Tom Cruise hop on the other side and be a bad guy for a change, after 20 years of him being the good guy. It was also kind of odd seeing him with gray hair … wonder if that was legit or not. Either way, it looks like a sign of the times for me. First time I saw him was in Top Gun when I was like 7 years old. Watching him grow old is just .. wierd. Another thing that’s a sign of the times too – apparently most of the film was shot on HD instead of on film. Didn’t look half-bad, either!

Get a Job, Bum
Over the course of the last three months I’ve just about applied for every helpdesk position in Omaha and Lincoln, and some in California too. The fact that I still don’t have a helpdesk position stands as proof of how well that’s working out. I don’t know what the hell I’m doing wrong. I’ve tried several different resumes and cover letters, including some fashioned after some book designed for military personnel who are retired and looking for work in the civilian market. I always get either “we decided to go with another candidate” or I don’t get anything at all. Actually, that’s not exactly true – Time Warner sent me a letter three months after I applied for a broadband installer position. I had totally forgotten about that. Thanks, Time Warner! Jackasses. Seriously, how hard is it for you to drop a rejection letter in the mail and not have it take three months?
Ignorant Clowns
Something that pisses me off …
“Hello? I have a question about this application you guys sent me. It says to enclose a monthly payment, but it doesn’t say how much the monthly payment is.” Ok, look at the second page and tell me if you see the payment listed there. “Oh there it is! Ha!”
Ha?
Pay attention. Things are just the same as they were 50 years ago – when you were my age. That means you STILL have to do some thinking on your own every once in awhile. And that’s regardless of whether or not you’ve written off thinking because you’re too busy power walking around the mall at 9am and driving 45 miles per hour in the left lane on I-80. Some people seriously piss me off sometimes.
The great thing about the human race is that we use our brains and opposable thumbs to adapt to changes in our environment. When Og got cold in his cave he bundled up in extra bear hides or whatever and made a fire. Who cares if he got eaten by a cougar after that. But not today, no. You give someone a DVD player with plugs that are color-coordinated to match the inputs on their television and they’ll STILL manage to fuck it up forty ways from Sunday. Hell, you can get a monkey to do it properly if you promise it a banana.
Phone Numbers
Something that pisses me off …
People who ask you for a phone number and then stop you when you try to give it to them because they weren’t ready for it. What the hell? Try getting a pen and a piece of paper out BEFORE you ask for something you know you’re not gonna remember off the top of your head, idiot. Why the hell do you think when you go into a restaurant the waiter has their shit READY when they ask you what you want? Imagine what that would be like if you started to tell the waiter what you wanted and then the waiter said “HEY WAIT A SECOND” and fished for his/her pencil – yeah, they’d look pretty stupid. As a matter of fact, they’d look as stupid as YOU. Think about it … but make sure to have your pen ready in case you decide to jot down any of your thoughts.
Rebuilding the Beast
Morning update. The sucky part about building a new webpage is if you really get into it you’ll end up spending hours and hours on it, and before you know it it’s past 4am and it barely feels like you’ve made any progress at all. I spent two hours just wrestling with the upload script – I was supposed to be able to just copy all the files over from the Stupor website (which resides in another directory on the same server) but I kept getting internal server errors when I tested the scripts out. First thing was I somehow managed to jack up the shell scripts, so I had to straighten those out. Then I spent some time scouring through code I could barely understand for any possible errors. Keep in mind, I don’t know Perl but I somehow managed to hotwire the script so that it would keep track of things in an XML document for aesthetic purposes – it’s much easier to manipulate existing code than it is to create new code. Then finally after raging about it to a friend I realized I just didn’t have a folder permission set properly. Dammit.
Pretty sterile look, isn’t it? In the three or four times I’ve tried to rebuild this site I just couldn’t come up with anything worth using as a graphics-intensive background, so armed with some techniques I hashed out while building http://www.imwithstupor.com I kind of went back to the basics here. I’m in the process of going through a book on Photoshop CS so if I figure anything out later on down the line I may change things again. But as for right now that sexy banner at the top of the screen is as far as I’m going to go.
First of all the sections aren’t going to be exactly what they were before. The tech section went down completely, although depending on how certain things pan out in the next few days I may put it back up. The Required Viewing section is going to be a consolidation of what used to be the Funny Shit and General Shit sections. Things That Piss Me Off is going to be a section unto its own because I’ve got a huge stack of things to rant about. And Lose Some Weight, Fatass is exactly what it sounds like – I’ll be making notes there every so often about a personal project of mine. You do the math.
I’ve been listening to the Megadeth remasters for the last week now. It’s funny how you can get used to how shitty an album will sound when the band spends most of their recording money on drugs, then one of them wises up later in life and mixes everything they way it should have been mixed. A real eye-opener. The new album comes out September 14, but like any good netizen I’ve already downloaded it and listened to it 60 times. It’s that damn good.
